Alcatraz has served as a U.S. military post, a prison, and, over time, penitentiary for the nation’s worst offenders. Angel Island serves as a mircocosm of U.S. military history. On its ground a missle base once existed, and it was also a Native-American hunting ground. Fort McDowell also was based on Angel Island. The Golden Gate Bridge took four years to build, and strikes a bold presence amidst the land’s naturally exquisite backdrop.
